INVESTIGATING MIXED MEDIA AND THE CROSS CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
I immigrated to the United States at a young age. As a result, it was easier for me to assimilate into the new culture than to fully retain my own. My awareness of this cultural shift has been intensified by my realization of the inequalities faced by women in my native country, Korea. My current studio work examines my experience as a Korean born woman living in the United States. My goal is to conduct studio research in mixed media applications and exploring the cross-cultural experience. My project involves the layering and synthesis of several complex art processes including textile dyes, photo emulsions on fabric and wax-based media. I dyed fabrics using nontraditional or alternative sources of color including food, teas and coffee. Then, I utilized a liquid emulsion called Liquid Light to transfer photographic information to assorted fabrics. Finally, an encaustic material was used to create the surface layers. This wax-based media provides a malleable surface and a physical support in the creation of sculptural forms. The majority of my technical research is represented in my efforts to successfully combine these diverse processes. As an artist educated in the United States, I find myself attempting to exist in two different cultures, an experience that creates feelings of division and alienation. The purpose of my project is to acknowledge and explore this personal condition and to bring attention to the struggle individuals experience existing in a culture distinct from their own. This mixed media research will be displayed as a sculptural installation.
