INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAM: INFORMATION SECURITY AND ASSURANCE

Interdisciplinary research integrates the analytical strengths of two or more often disparate scientific disciplines to create a new hybrid discipline. By engaging seemingly unrelated disciplines, traditional gaps in terminology, approach, and methodology might be gradually eliminated. With roadblocks to potential collaboration removed, a true meeting of minds can take place: one that broadens the scope of investigation into cyber security, yields fresh and possibly unexpected insights, and gives rise to new interdisciplines that are more analytically sophisticated. We report our experiences in trying to build an interdisciplinary program in information assurance. We provide undergraduate research experience in information security for our students and prepare them for graduate studies, as well as work in the government or industry to support the national effort to increase personnel in cyber security and public awareness on electronic information security. We had four undergraduate research trainees to work with information assurance faculty on research projects in cryptography, computer security, secure e-commerce, and computer forensics. Activities include research in well-structured undergraduate projects in information assurance, training workshops, seminars and colloquia featuring guest speakers, and presentations of results at conferences.
