PRESENTING BORN INTO THIS: SHARING THE CONCEPT AND CLOSING THE WOUNDS
Born Into This began as a research project in the fields of drama and poetry therapy. The basic concepts and concrete elements of these therapies were applied to the creation of seven spoken word pieces dealing with the author's personal life (in topics ranging from cultural identity and family matters to issues with sex and sexuality). After researching and applying the findings of the research to an experimental theater project, the concept of Born Into This as a "healing play" was introduced and the basic script for a one-woman show was drafted. Through narrative non-fiction and rhythmic story-telling, the author creates an artistic performance piece illustrating the struggle to find a voice in the chaos and noise of life. A great deal of the author's personal history, including life-changing events, triumphs and failures are depicted in a rhythmic flow of emotional honesty. Born Into This is not only the author's tale of overcoming hardship on the journey to self discovery, but it is also an example of creative self-disclosure for therapeutic value and for the purpose of healing deeply emotional wounds. Thus, after seven months of re-working the script and dealing with tremendous insecurities, the author is now conclusively prepared to share the work as a full length stage production. The purpose of this project is to go full circle by demonstrating the healing power of poetry and drama through presenting the product of the research; Born Into This, the performance piece. Essentially this presentation will become the final point of catharsis for the performer and will perhaps serve as the initiation of a dialogue between peers about alternative performance art and more specifically, this concept of a "healing play".
